When Grief Finds You, He Does Too
Share
Grief wears many faces. Sometimes it hits like a tidal wave after a sudden loss. Other times, it settles in slowly—when life takes a turn you didn’t expect, when prayers go unanswered, or when a long season of hope quietly fades into disappointment.
Whatever shape it takes, grief leaves a hollow ache. And in that emptiness, it’s easy to wonder: Is God really near to this?
Yet, when we open Scripture, we find a God who drew near to Hagar in the wilderness, to Hannah in her weeping, to Mary outside the tomb. He is not distant from grief. It stirs His compassion.
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18
He doesn’t shame your tears or rush you past them. He meets you in them. Jesus, the Man of Sorrows, wept at Lazarus’s tomb—even though He knew resurrection was coming (John 11:35). He wasn't put off by Mary and Martha’s grief. He stood with them in it.
That’s the kind of Savior we have. One who enters our mourning and offers peace in the midst of pain. Peace that doesn’t erase the ache—but holds us steady through it. When peace is found in a person—not a resolution—we can breathe even when we don’t understand. Because when our hope rests in a good and sovereign God, we can walk through sorrow with a steadiness not our own.
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”
— Isaiah 26:3
The Lord sees every tear. He gathers them as precious pieces of your story—one He’s still redeeming. And He promises that one day, He will wipe them all away.
So when the day feels heavy—know this: you’re not forgotten. You’re held. And God’s comfort is not distant or delayed. It’s here. It’s Him.
Reflection Question:
When you reflect on Jesus’ compassion at Lazarus’s tomb, what does it show you about how He sees your pain? How have you seen His presence meet you in the middle of grief before?
Prayer:
Father, I confess it’s hard to feel peace when the ache is fresh. I don’t always know how to bring You my sorrow—I either try to fix it or bury it. But You invite me to come honestly. So here I am. I need You. Help me trust that You are near even when You feel far. Thank You for being the God who stays, who sees, who comforts. Give me the grace to rest in Your presence, even when the pain lingers. Amen.
