When God Asks for What You Treasure Most
Share
In Genesis 22, Abraham is asked to do the unthinkable: offer up his promised son. It’s a story that confronts us with a hard truth—obedience to God may cost us something precious. But beneath that cost is a deeper invitation: to trust the One who provides.
"He said, ‘Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love... and offer him there as a burnt offering.’” —Genesis 22:2
God was never after Isaac—He was after Abraham’s heart. When we’re asked to surrender something we cherish, we must remember: God isn’t trying to strip us of joy, but to anchor us more deeply in it. To lead us to surrender anything we love more, so we can love Him most—the source of our true joy and fulfillment.
In Abraham’s case, God provided the ram. In ours, He’s already provided Christ—the Lamb who laid down His life. We obey not to earn favor, but because we’ve already received it.
Reflection Question:
Is there something you’re holding back from God—and what might He be forming in you through surrender?
Prayer:
Lord, obedience doesn’t always come easily—especially when it costs us something dear. But we trust You’re the God who sees and the God who provides. Help us surrender not out of fear, but from faith. Teach us to release anything we’ve placed above You, so that we might love You most and find our deepest joy in You alone. Amen.
