“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.” –Psalm 63:1
David wrote these words from the wilderness, where the barren landscape became a vivid picture of spiritual dryness.
There are seasons when faith feels alive and God’s presence seems unmistakable.
And then there are wilderness seasons.
Prayer feels harder. Scripture does not seem to resonate the way it once did. The answer you have been asking God for still has not come. You keep showing up, but internally, everything feels lifeless.
It is easy in those seasons to assume that something has gone wrong.
But Scripture gives us a different picture.
Before Jesus preached a sermon, called a disciple, or performed a miracle, the Holy Spirit led Him into the wilderness.
Jesus entered there in perfect obedience to the Father. He was hungry, isolated, tested, and tempted, but none of those things meant God had withdrawn from Him. He was exactly where the Holy Spirit wanted Him to be.
That distinction matters.
Throughout Scripture, the wilderness is often a place of testing, dependence, and formation. It is where our loyalties are exposed, where God teaches His people to depend on Him, and where He prepares them for what comes next.
That pattern appears again and again.
Moses fled for his life into the wilderness. Years later, God called to him from the burning bush. Israel spent forty years there being tested and humbled. Elijah ran there depleted and afraid, but God strengthened him.
The wilderness is not comfortable. Scripture never pretends it is.
But it is not void of purpose. And neither is it empty of God.
That understanding matters because spiritual dryness can tempt us to draw conclusions not based on truth: God must be distant, or I must have done something wrong to end up here.
A dry season is not proof of either.
It is not a verdict on your faith. It may be the very place God is forming it.
So when faith feels dry, draw near to the God who has not moved.
That is what David does in Psalm 63. He does not wait for the wilderness to feel different before seeking God. From the dry and parched land itself, he cries, “earnestly I seek you.”
Spiritual dryness is not a call to manufacture a feeling. It is a call to deeper dependence. When your soul is thirsty, go to the source of living water.
He has not left you. He will not forsake you. And the God who meets His people in the wilderness will sustain you through it.
Reflection Question
If you’re in a dry season, what does it look like for you to earnestly seek God? If you’ve come through one, what did He teach you?
God, You are my God, and I want to seek You even when I feel dry and empty. When my soul is thirsty, remind me that You are the One who satisfies. Help me keep turning toward You, trusting Your love and faithfulness even when I cannot feel Your nearness. Hold me steady in this wilderness, and let this season draw me deeper into dependence on You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Love the Nailed it Jael sweatshirt! It is a good soft fabric. I ordered a large because I am cold all the time and wear a long-sleeve T-shirt under it. However, most people will not need that. The weight says Medium-Heavy… I would say it’s a medium weight for warmth. If you are warm-blooded or average, it would be perfect. My husband got the Heroes sweatshirt and loves it.
Store owner replied:
Thank you so much for your order and for taking the time to share your feedback. We're so happy to hear you love the tee, but sorry to hear it arrived with an odd smell. That is definitely not an experience we intend for our customers to have.
This isn't typical, but occasionally newly printed garments can have a temporary smell from the printing process. If the shirt is packaged immediately after production before it is completely dry, that scent can seem stronger when first opened. The smell is harmless and usually disappears completely after the first wash, so we're glad to hear washing it helped. If it does not dissipate, please reach out to us and we'll be glad to help further.
Thanks so much for your support. We truly appreciate it.
