The Heart That Will See God

The Heart That Will See God

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”
—Matthew 5:8

The people around you often see different sides of you. Your coworkers see what you are like at work. Your church sees what you are like in worship, fellowship, and service. Your family sees what emerges when you are tired, frustrated, or hurt. Yet only one Person sees all the way down, where your thoughts run and your motives sit unedited.

Scripture calls that place the heart, and it is far more than the seat of emotions. It includes where you think and reason. It is where your desires take root, where you make your choices, and where your faith lives. It is the whole of who you are, and it is the one thing God has always asked for. All of it.

This is what Jesus has in mind when He says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”

Pure means authentic and uncontaminated. Like refined gold, nothing else is mixed with it. In the same way, a pure heart is undivided. It has no rival loyalties competing with God for the center of your life. A pure heart is not a heart that has never sinned. It is a heart that is not running two agendas. What you say, what you do, and what you want underneath finally agree.

Yet, the problem is obvious. Our hearts are far from pure. They are often torn between other loves. In fact, our hearts are deceptive (Jeremiah 17:9). We may say we want God without realizing we want something else more. We may speak of surrender while clinging to control. We may pray for His will while hoping for our own. Or we may say He is enough when our peace really rests on the outcome we want.

That leaves us with one question: How can a deceitful, divided heart ever become pure enough to see God? The answer is not: Get your act together and try harder. If purity depended on our ability to inspect and repair ourselves, this beatitude would only condemn us. We cannot create a clean heart by willpower.

David understood this after his sin. He did not promise to fix himself and then ask God to approve the finished work. He pleaded, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” David asked God to do what only God can do. He needed more than behavior modification. He needed a new heart.

That prayer leads us to the gospel. God does not receive us because we have successfully cleaned ourselves up. He receives us through Christ, whose death cleanses our guilt and whose righteousness is given to those who trust Him. Then, by the Holy Spirit, God begins to make our inner life match our new identity.

The apostle James admonishes us: “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded” (James 4:8). He is not telling us to perform inner surgery apart from grace. We draw near because God has opened the way to Him, and we depend on Him to purify what we cannot cleanse ourselves. Repentance is our response to God's kindness and grace; transformation is His work in us.

When we feel the shame of sin and recognize our divided hearts, we do not run from God until we feel worthy to return. We run toward the only One who can make us clean. We draw near, bringing our divided motives into God’s presence, confessing what He exposes, turning from what competes with Him, and obeying what He has commanded in love and wisdom.

This is why abiding in Christ matters. We bring our motives into the light, remain in His Word, receive His forgiveness, and ask the Spirit to help us love what God loves. Each time we release control, confess a hidden motive, refuse a rival master, or obey when obedience costs us, God is making our hearts more whole.

Paul describes how this transformation takes place: as we behold the glory of the Lord, we are transformed into His image from one degree of glory to another (2 Corinthians 3:18). Beholding Christ means fixing our attention on who He is as He reveals Himself in His Word.  And as we do, we are conformed into His image. Our hearts begin to look more like His.

Jesus promised that the pure in heart will see God. We often hear that as a promise about eternity, and it is.  It is the highest hope of a believer to one day see God and dwell with Him forever. But the promise reaches into the present as well. Through these ordinary acts of faith, God makes Himself known to us even now.  Yet when Christ appears, we will be like Him because we will see Him as He is (1 John 3:2). Though we now see and know in part; then we shall see and know Him fully, even as we are known.

One day, faith will become sight, and the transformation the Spirit has begun will be complete. The heart God makes whole will see the One it has learned to trust, face to face.

Reflection Question

What has been quietly competing with God for first place in your heart, and what would surrendering it to Him look like?

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your purifying work. You see every part of me, including the parts I cannot see. I confess that I often reach for You while trying to protect my control, comfort, appearance, or preferred outcome. Forgive me for having divided loyalties. Please help me to surrender those to You now.  Create in me a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within me.  Search me and try me.  See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Amen.

Fits to size perfect, didn't shrink. the material is comfortable and seems like it will stand up to time. The communication was good and my order came in a timely matter. However, the shirt needs a good ironing (yes I still iron stuff) my daughters don't get it. I can't wait to wear this to fellowship :)

I love this shirt soooo much! I’ve been eye-balling it for awhile because I love the OT, and I’ve studied the sacrificial system in depth. I also love a little bit of humor and sarcasm, so this shirt had my name written all over it! :) It’s great quality and just as shown in the pic. I wear a 10/12, and I got the medium. It fits just how I would expect (not too small!). I’m 5’4.5”, 160 lbs, and pear shaped, if that helps you pick your size.

The first place I went to with my shirt was a Women's Conference that weekend. The opening hostess made a comment that she was a woman who was more comfortable with a tent peg her hand and if you didn't know what she was talking about read Judges 4. Imagine her delight when I saw her afterwards with my Jael t-shirt! Love the quality but I just have one huge request and that is to make v-neck shirts available for women. I usually don't buy crewneck T-shirts but I couldn't resist your designs. I'd probably buy more if I could get v-necks, 😉

I recently wore it to a small craft show. I was talking with one of the vendors. She asked me if my shirt referred to Mary and Martha. I answered in the affirmative. Then we proceeded to have a nice conversation about the two sisters and how we see ourselves. It was an amazing experience.
