Have You Misunderstood This Word?

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight."
— Proverbs 9:10
Fear is probably not the first word that comes to mind when you think about your relationship with God.
Love, grace, mercy, forgiveness. Those feel more natural. More comfortable.
Yet over and over, Scripture speaks about the fear of the Lord as something good. And not only good, but essential. Proverbs tells us it is where wisdom begins. In other words, if we don't understand this, we will struggle to understand much else about God.
The challenge is that many Christians aren't quite sure what to do with the idea of fearing Him.
Some hear the word fear and immediately think of terror. They picture a God who is perpetually disappointed, watching for mistakes, ready to punish. Living with that view of God is exhausting. You never feel secure. You never feel close.
Others move in the opposite direction. God becomes so familiar that His holiness barely registers anymore. We speak casually about Him, think casually about Him, and sometimes approach Him with less reverence than we would show a respected teacher, employer, or judge.
Neither picture reflects the God revealed in Scripture.
The fear of the Lord is not the terror of someone running from God. It is the awe of someone who has finally begun to see Him clearly.
Think about Isaiah standing in the throne room of heaven. He sees the Lord high and lifted up. The seraphim cry out, "Holy, holy, holy." The foundations shake. The room fills with smoke.
Isaiah's response is immediate.
"Woe is me! For I am lost."
He suddenly understands two things at once. God is infinitely holy, and he is not.
What is striking about that moment is what happens next. God does not cast Isaiah away. He cleanses him. His guilt is removed. His sin is atoned for. The same God whose holiness overwhelmed him is the God who made a way for him to stand in His presence.
That is where many faithful believers get stuck.
We understand that God is holy. We understand that we are sinners. What we struggle to understand is how those two realities can coexist without crushing us.
The answer is Jesus.
The judgment our sin deserved did not simply vanish. It was carried by Christ. At the cross, Jesus bore the wrath we could never survive so that we could receive the welcome we could never earn.
That changes the nature of our fear.
We no longer approach God as condemned criminals waiting for a verdict. We come as adopted sons and daughters who stand in awe of the Father who loved us enough to rescue us at such a cost.
In fact, the more deeply you understand grace, the more profound your fear of God becomes.
Not because you become more frightened of Him.
Because you become more amazed by Him.
You begin to see more clearly His holiness, His power, His wisdom, His mercy, and His love. You realize that the One who spoke galaxies into existence also chose to set His affection on you. That realization leaves you humbled, grateful, and full of wonder.
And strangely enough, that kind of fear brings freedom.
Most of us spend a lot of time afraid of things.
We fear people's opinions. We fear failure. We fear loss. We fear the future. We fear circumstances we cannot control.
Jesus addressed this directly. He told His followers not to fear those who could harm the body but could do nothing beyond that. Then He pointed them to God.
At first, His words sound startling. But almost immediately He reminds them that their heavenly Father knows every sparrow and even numbers the hairs on their heads.
Do you see what Jesus is doing?
He is teaching us that the God who deserves our highest reverence is also the God who cares for us with perfect tenderness.
When the fear of the Lord takes its rightful place in your heart, other fears begin to lose their grip.
You no longer need people's approval quite so desperately.
You no longer feel crushed by uncertainty.
You no longer carry every burden as though everything depends on you.
The God who rules all things is also the God who loves you. Once that reality settles into your heart, many of the fears that once dominated your thinking begin to shrink.
This is why the fear of the Lord is not something Christians should avoid.
It is a gift.
It teaches us who God really is. It anchors us in reality. It produces wisdom. It deepens our worship. It frees us from being ruled by lesser fears.
So don't settle for a different view of God than the one Scripture gives you.
Look at Him as He has revealed Himself.
Holy beyond comprehension.
Glorious beyond description.
Merciful beyond expectation.
And because of Christ, this God who inspires awe has also opened the door for you to come near.
The closer you draw to Him, the more you will discover that reverence and love belong together. What begins as trembling wonder becomes deep security, because the God who deserves your fear is also the God who calls you His own.
Reflection Question
Be honest about your view of God. Is He too frightening to come near, or too familiar to take seriously? And what lesser fears have been ruling you where the fear of the Lord should be?

Prayer
Father, I confess that I often lose sight of who You really are. Sometimes I treat You as distant and intimidating. Other times I become so comfortable that I forget Your holiness altogether. Forgive me.
Help me to see You more clearly. Open my eyes to Your greatness, Your purity, Your power, and Your mercy. Thank You that Jesus bore the judgment my sin deserved so that I can draw near without fear of condemnation.
Teach me what it means to fear You rightly. Let that holy awe deepen my worship, strengthen my trust, and loosen the grip of every lesser fear. May I find rest in knowing that the God who reigns over all things is also the Father who watches over me with perfect love.
