"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." –Matthew 5:4
Let’s face it.Mourning is something we tend to avoid whenever possible. It makes us uncomfortable. Vulnerable.
Instead, we embrace all kinds of coping mechanisms to numb the pain, preferring to go around it rather than through it.
Even worship services in the West often prioritize songs of triumph over songs of lament. Never mind that the Psalms are filled with both. Yet, Jesus flips our script once again and calls those who mourn blessed. How can this be?
Mourning as a Mark of the Kingdom
Consider the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. He emerged from the wilderness proclaiming, “Repent, the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”According to Matthew’s Gospel, He then preached His inaugural sermon and defined the characteristics of those in that kingdom—the Beatitudes.
Could mourning actually be a sign of the kingdom within us?
Notice how the Beatitudes build upon one another. Only those who are poor in spirit (5:3) recognize their brokenness and need for God. As a result, we mourn our sin and the brokenness of the world. This is a sign of God’s transformational work within us: We grieve what grieves Him.
Mourning Our Sin
Grieving our sin is the natural response of a believer whose heart has been transformed by the gospel. The closer we get to Jesus, the more aware we become of sin in our lives. But His conviction is not a sentence of condemnation or shame. His conviction is a clarion call to freedom.
It’s an invitation into the cleansing presence of God, where we humble ourselves in repentance and seek His mercy, grace, and forgiveness.
Mourning the State of the World
But mourning isn’t just about our own sin. Whether it’s the death of a loved one, the betrayal of a friend, disease and disability, or the loss of a dream, much of our grief stems from living in a fallen world.
Our world is not as it should be.Yet, we do not mourn as those without hope.No. We look forward to the day of comfort when the kingdom is fully established on earth as it is in heaven, and God Himself wipes away every tear. We shall be comforted.
The Fruit of Mourning
It’s hard to believe that the suffering we mourn has any benefit, but it bears the fruit of refinement. Just as gold is refined by fire, the believer is purified by the trials of life. God never wastes anything. As we faithfully sow in tears, He promises we will reap a harvest of joy.
But this isn’t just about us.
Mourning also produces the fruit of compassion. It grants us the capacity to mourn with those who mourn and weep with those who weep. After all, we were never meant to walk alone.
Comfort Is Coming
Whatever you’re going through, remember: God has not abandoned you. Often, the only way out is through. Keep going. Trust that He walks with you, carrying you when you cannot walk another step.
You are not alone. You are seen and loved beyond measure. So, bring your sorrow to the One who truly understands and allow His comfort to sustain you.
Weeping may endure for a night, but joy is coming. And so is He.
How have you experienced God's comfort in seasons of grief or repentance?
How can your own experience of mourning equip you to comfort and support others?
Prayer:
Lord, it’s not easy to believe You are close when I can’t see or feel You through the pain. Help me take You at Your Word. You are near to the brokenhearted. Transform my heart to grieve what grieves You and to rejoice in what brings You joy. Give me courage to endure and grace to place my hope not in my circumstances, but in You alone.
Love the shirt. The material it is manufactured with is my favorite… Very soft and comfortable.
Delivery was on time and I have had several compliments and smiles while wearing the T-shirt. Thanks for all you do. Continued success with your business.
I love your t-shirts. So comfortable. Fit perfectly. I love 100%cotton shirts. I am ordering more. I am in love. Thank you so much! Also fast shipping. You are my new favorite company! Sorry about the T-shirt being sideways. I will correct that next time.
Great shirt! Love the quality of the tee shirt. Not thin but just right weight very comfortable fit true to size. Color is exactly as described. I showed my T-shirt at BSF today. The shirt tied in with this study in Romans.
I love it!!!! The color is beautiful, and the fit is exactly as expected. The quality of the sewing is great! I expect this sweater to last for years and years and can’t wait to wear it out. 🥰
Fits to size perfect, didn't shrink. the material is comfortable and seems like it will stand up to time. The communication was good and my order came in a timely matter. However, the shirt needs a good ironing (yes I still iron stuff) my daughters don't get it. I can't wait to wear this to fellowship :)
I love this shirt soooo much! I’ve been eye-balling it for awhile because I love the OT, and I’ve studied the sacrificial system in depth. I also love a little bit of humor and sarcasm, so this shirt had my name written all over it! :) It’s great quality and just as shown in the pic. I wear a 10/12, and I got the medium. It fits just how I would expect (not too small!). I’m 5’4.5”, 160 lbs, and pear shaped, if that helps you pick your size.
My husband wanted this shirt right away lol, and now we’re ordering another couple. Thanks for thinking of these clever phrases. Appreciate the coupons!! Thank you!
The first place I went to with my shirt was a Women's Conference that weekend. The opening hostess made a comment that she was a woman who was more comfortable with a tent peg her hand and if you didn't know what she was talking about read Judges 4. Imagine her delight when I saw her afterwards with my Jael t-shirt!
Love the quality but I just have one huge request and that is to make v-neck shirts available for women. I usually don't buy crewneck T-shirts but I couldn't resist your designs. I'd probably buy more if I could get v-necks, 😉
Good overall experience. Shirt was darker than expected according to stock photos but still a nice shirt. T-shirt material heavy weight feel for those who might wonder, but seems to be a material that will last for a long time.
