A God Who Delights

"The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing."
— Zephaniah 3:17

Imagine the most generous gift you have ever received, and then picture the face of the person who gave it. There is something in that face you can't fake, a gladness that runs out ahead of the gift, a joy in the giving itself. Scripture shows us God wears that same face toward His children. He delights to call us His own.

Most of us are comfortable saying God loves us, but many of us tend to picture it the way we'd describe a king's love for his subjects. Real, but dutiful and governed from the throne. But listen to the way Jesus speaks of the Father. He tells His disciples to stop being afraid, and then gives the staggering reason: it brings the Father genuine pleasure to hand them the kingdom. The God who owns the cattle on a thousand hills, who needs nothing and lacks nothing, finds His joy in giving it all away to children who could never repay Him.

A reluctant giver gives and resents it; a delighted Father gives at great cost with abundant joy. While we were still sinners, God gave His own Son. Who would do that for someone he merely tolerates?

The same vision of delight runs through the words God gave the prophet Zephaniah. In them, the God who spoke the galaxies into existence stands in the midst of His people and rejoices over them with singing. Not a low hum. Loud singing and shouts of joy.

His delight is part of who He is. It flows from His own heart and lands, of all places, on people like us, ordinary and forgetful and prone to wander. Yet, we are His joy. From Zephaniah's song to a father running down a road to meet a son who squandered everything, the picture of God never changes.

So bring the very thing you are most sure disqualifies you and the failures you cannot undo. God has seen all of it, and He has not turned away. Your sin was never small to Him. It cost Him the life of His own Son. But He carried every ounce of it to the cross so that nothing would stand between you and the Father's delight. You are His child, and He delightfully rejoices over you.

Reflection Questions:
When you read that God exults over His people with loud singing, what does it tell you about who He is? How does that truth reshape the way you see His heart toward you? How does it reshape your heart towards Him?

Prayer:
Father, thank You that You delight in me. I don't always believe that the way I should, so help it sink in. Thank You that You don't just put up with me, but You actually rejoice over me. I can hardly comprehend how such a holy, powerful and sovereign King can take absolute pleasure and delight in me. Yet, I am so grateful You do. Help me to live like someone You are glad to call Your own, and let that change the way I love You back. In Jesus' name, amen.
